Surf For Life - Surf Film Festival Call for Submissions
Surf For Life is excited to announce this event to help support its inaugural trip this May. We are calling for all Bay Area surfers and cinematographers to submit footage of themselves and friends surfing that will be presented and shared with our local surf community at the event.

The submission window is from April 6th to April 29th and the event will be on May 5th. An official entry application and registration form can be downloaded by visiting http://surfforlifeglobal.org/surf_film_festival.aspx

The event promises to bring together local surfers and cinematographers to share their personal footage and to give props to one another on snagging some excellent waves. Local footage is preferred and encouraged, but not mandatory. Submissions will be viewed during the event and one lucky winner will receive a custom piece of surf art designed and painted by Surf For Life's own, John Dering.

This is a happy hour event so there will be drink specials and John Colins Lounge (www.johncolins.com) will donate a portion of those proceeds to help support Surf For Life's inaugural trip.

So come check out some great local surf footage, give props to your friends and favorite films, have a few drinks and support a great cause!

Surf For Life Announces Inaugural Trip to Costa Rica in May 2009
Surf For Life is a not-for-profit organization designed to connect surfers with community service activities to create impact at an international level. The mission of the organization is to channel the interest and energy of individual surfers into teams that travel internationally to various project sites where they can experience world class waves while serving as hands-on volunteers.

Participants will be able to surf, learn to surf, and tour the region while they work on the project. You don't need construction experience, you don't need to be a surfer-all you need is a sense of adventure and a passion for making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.

Please join us for an informational meeting discussing details and how you can participate. We'll be making homemade dumplings and talking about the specifics this Sunday, February 8th at 7:30pm at 1026 Cole St, San Francisco, CA 94117

Astonishing Coincidence
We just have to mention and remember Adrian Ruiz of SanFrancisco 24 years old
Attacked and Killed while surfing in Mexico off of Troncones Beach 45 min west of the resort of Ixtapa in Aucapulco a couple days ago
It is said to have been 600lb Tiger Shark “300kg” 300 meters from shore was identified
It bit a 15” gash from hip to knee, this all comes after the fatal death of Dr. Dave Martin in Solana Beach in San Diego, CA

A persons chances of getting bitten in any given year is like 1 and 280 million
Compared to 1 and 6,700 chance of being killed in a car by taking 1 trip to your local surf shop
There were 71 reported attacks world wide last year, Up from 63 in 2006
Attacks on the Atlantic Coast, Particularly in Florida are more common than they are on the Pacific
There has been 10 shark attacks this year in Florida at a popular surfing beach called New Smyrna Beach, 3 in the past week
This is the 3rd fatal attacks this year compared to 2 last year, including one last week in Australia a 16 year old boy Peter Edmunds, was body surfing off the north coast of New South Wales, he was bitten on the leg
Please keep in mind March and April is when female Sharks are arriving in warmer waters esp. between California & Mexico to have there babies
Another factor is that there is a rise in the seal population, not to mention sharks have very poor eye sight
Just be aware of your surroundings, let people know where you are heading out to surf & Have Zero Fear!

Extremely Rare Fatal "Shark Attack" in San Diego
This is the first death in San Diego Since the last fatal shark attack in 2004 a man diving off the coast of mendocino & in 2003 in san luis obispo a women swimming at Avilo Beach
Since 1926 there only has been 96 shark attacks
Out of those only 7 have been fatal
Although Great Whites normally stay in colder water they do come down to the warmer waters to give birth & it's that time!!
This shark is said to be as long as 17 to 20 feet long
It attacks in the usual seal attack manner
It comes from beneath and shoots out of the water
It has a very powerful bite over 2 feet, knee to ankel
It leaves you to bleed then comes back
Please keep aware at this point the beaches are technically closed for about 8 to 16 or so miles from solana beach both ways
"Advise"Head out in pairs at this point if you have no fear
Please keep in mind that they are activly hunting for this shark/ great white
They are chumming close to shore as well in attempts to catch this killer, so please be very aware esp; for the next 72 hours
Dave Martin was training only 150 feet from shore in the Fletcher Cove Area
Our hearts go out the Dave Martin, a very dedicated Triathlete & his family "may you be with god always & cross the heavenly finish line"
Godbless all our friends & surf / water family!
Our Actionsports family
Have a safe summer! Be safe always! Mahalos!

  Collapse
When your ticket gets punched it's time. To think this would have occurred in SD is mindnumbing. As another multi-sport whom has surfed up and down SD and OC counties for 30+ years..this is a surprise.
Lest we not forget, surfing, open water swimming, SUP etc are wilderness events when we venture into the ocean. We are the visitors, and it appears that there was nothing anyone could have done differently, Dave nor the people that provided aid. The absurdity that he was a retired veterinarian is not lost on me, and yet, do you think the shark deserves to die?
